Stephens City is within driving distance of a wide range of historical and recreational attractions. The Cedar Creek and Hupps Hill battlefields are just a few miles away. Also nearby is the Belle Grove Plantation, which was at the center of the decisive Civil War Battle of Cedar Creek. The plantation includes the main house and gardens, the original outbuildings, a barn from 1918, an apple orchard and more.
The Shenandoah Valley, founded by the Knights of the Golden Horseshoe in 1716, provides unparalleled opportunities for outdoor recreation. Shenandoah National Park is one of the highest and most scenic portions of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The park contains more than 500 miles of hiking and biking trails, including 100-plus miles of the Appalachian Trail. The park is also a wildlife sanctuary, providing refuge for about 50 species of animals, including deer, black bears and wild turkeys.
The Shenandoah River is a scenic place to swim, fish, canoe, raft, kayak and tube. The river flows through the valley to the west, and Massanutten Mountain stands between the river's north and south forks. Piedmont country, with its spectacular rolling hills, lies to the east of Shenandoah National Park. Blue Ridge Parkway is a 469-mile route that connects Shenandoah National Park and the Great Smoky Mountains along the Blue Ridge Mountains and other ranges.
Located at the Northern Entrance to Skyline Drive and the Shenandoah National Park are the Skyline Caverns. This is the only place in the country where unique mineral formations known as anthodites can be viewed by the public. Sometimes called "Orchids of the Mineral Kingdom," their delicate white spikes seem to defy gravity, spreading in all directions from their positions on the cave ceiling. The anthodites grow an estimated one inch every seven thousand years.
Frederick County is one of the nation’s largest producers of apples and peaches and is the state’s leading harvester of these crops. Stephens City is home to a significant amount of agricultural land. A popular annual event is the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival. This festival, held in the nearby town of Winchester, celebrates the arrival of spring and the first blooms on the apple trees. The Apple Harvest Arts and Crafts Festival occurs in autumn and features arts, crafts, music, apple butter making, exhibits, square dancing, and food including, of course, apples.
